3C Fiber

3C (Chirally-Coupled-Core) fiber is produced by drawing from an online rotating preform. Its quartz cladding contains two cores: an axially distributed central core with a large core diameter, typically exceeding 30 μm, used for signal light transmission. The other, off-axis, helically distributed side core, with a core diameter of only a dozen microns, is used to control the mode of the central core, coupling high-order modes into the side cores and inducing high loss (greater than 100 dB/m). This allows the fundamental mode in the central core to be transmitted with extremely low loss (less than 0.1 dB/m) without relying on any mode control techniques, while maintaining a large mode field area.
